Statewide Fracture Critical Bridge Inspection
Missouri Department of Transportation

    Project Features
  • Four-year inspection program involved bridges statewide
  • Structures ranged from major urban multi-span and multi-level viaducts to simple single-span rural bridges

The inspection program included major multi-span and multi-level viaducts in urban areas to simple single-span rural bridges.

Horner & Shifrin performed fracture critical bridge inspections statewide for the Missouri Department of Transportation of a period of four years. The program included bridges located on both federal-aid routes and non-federal-aid routes in numerous counties of Missouri as well as Kansas City. The project involved close visual examination of each bridge and non-destructive testing of steel tension members or components whose failure could result in the catastrophic collapse of the bridge. In addition, a condition rating for superstructure, substructure, bank and channel was determined.

A large variety of structures were included in the inspection program, from major multi-span and multi-level viaducts in urban areas to simple single-span rural bridges incorporating these trusses, pony trusses and two girder systems. The project also required restrictive scheduling and close coordination of inspection activities with railroads, traffic authorities and access equipment subcontractors.
