4KV Distribution System |
New system allows repairs without backup cable outageHorner & Shifrin provided design services for the replacement of the existing 4KV radial dual-feed electrical distribution system at St. Louis Community College’s Meramec Campus. The system was nearly 30 years old and consisted of four circuits. Two circuits fed each unit substation through an interlocked switch. Due to the age of the system, failures were not repairable. Adding to the problem, the dual circuits were terminated and spliced to the buildings in a single junction box. A repair of one cable required an outage of the backup cable. The new system separated each circuit into a separate box for ease of maintenance. Each junction box uses loadbreak elbows and connectors so faults can be easily isolated, and with the use of fault indicators, they can be quickly located. To resist corrosion, all junction boxes were constructed of stainless steel and PVC-coated metal-clad cables were installed. |
