Heli-Cone Up-flow Solids Contact Clarifier
City of Collinsville, Illinois

    Project Features
  • Innovative clarifier uses only the force of water entering tank to mix, flocculate, coagulate and clarify water
  • Clarifier contains no moving parts or motors
  • Heli-Cone uses nearly 24% less softening lime, saving 1,200 lbs. of lime per day

Water is supplied from five groundwater wells

Horner & Shifrin conducted an analysis of the City’s existing water treatment plant which indicated, among other things, that a new softening basin was needed to meet the future capacity requirements faced by the plant. A further evaluation of alternative methods for providing the needed increase in softening capability resulted in a recommendation that a Heli-Cone up-flow solids contact clarifier (designed by Tonka Equipment Company) be added to the current water softening system.

Horner & Shifrin then proceeded to design and prepare construction plans and specifications for the installation of this innovative clarifier which uses only the force of the water entering the tank to mix, flocculate, coagulate, and clarify the water. No moving parts or motors are needed, since the water is forced to rise up through the clarifier in a helical path traveling through a suspended sludge blanket, thus creating long contact times for highly efficient softening and effective coagulated solids removal.

The fully installed Tonka Heli-Cone up-flow solids contact clarifier has allowed the City of Collinsville’s water treatment plant to produce excellent quality water, while using nearly 24% less softening lime, as compared to their former conventional lime softening system. This lower lime usage equates to 1,200 lbs. less lime per day, which significantly reduces the quantity of treatment residual material (sludge) of which the plant must dispose.
