Roundabouts are Innovative Solutions to Congested Intersections

Horner & Shifrin used cutting-edge traffic calming technology in designing a roundabout intersection for the City of O’Fallon, Illinois.

The 100-ft-diameter roundabout at Obernuefemann Road and State Street, currently under construction, will improve safety and accessibility for area motorists. This already-busy intersection, which sees much of its volume from motorists using IL 50 nearby, will see traffic increase considerably since it will be the main access to the City’s future Sports Complex and Community Park, as well as serving a growing residential area. Horner & Shifrin also assisted the City in obtaining $329,600 in Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds to help with the design and construction of the roundabout.

Project Manager Steve Donahue states, “Roundabouts provide increased traffic flow while improving pedestrian safety and accessibility. And in this case, the City should see reduced air and noise pollution levels as well, another important benefit for the residents of O’Fallon.”
