Providence Road Pedestrian Crossing
University of Missouri - Columbia

New pedestrian crossing provides safe pathway between campus buildings
    Project Features
  • Bridge was designed to complement the surrounding campus
  • Bridge accommodates pedestrians, bicycles and golf carts
  • Bridge lighting was designed to eliminate glare for drivers

Horner & Shifrin designed and prepared cost estimates for a new pedestrian crossing on the University of Missouri - Columbia campus that provides a link between the Devine Pavilion and Memorial Stadium. The new crossing accommodates pedestrians, bicycles and small vehicles such as golf carts. The design study phase considered both bridge and tunnel options for the structure that will cross Providence Road south of Stadium Road on the University campus. Schematic designs and cost estimates for each alternative were prepared. The bridge design took several design “cues” from its surroundings, namely the barrel vaultistanding seam metal roofs on the Devine Pavilion and stadium press box, brick from both buildings, and limestone from the Campus signage monuments at Providence Road and Stadium Boulevard.

Lighting of the bridge was sensitively handled to eliminate glare for drivers on Providence Road. Lighting will be ambient (directed upon the underside of the barrel-shaped roof deck), thus providing an even, soft glow on the bridge deck with no glare.

Horner & Shifrin also assisted the University with preparation of grant applications to secure funding for the project.
