Horner & Shifrin designed improvements to Broadway from Pacific Street to Water Street in Cape Girardeau, MO, approximately 3,500 feet. The project included milling and overlaying of the existing roadway, removing and replacing sidewalks, removing and replacing curbs and gutters, the addition of video detection and an uninterruptible power supply to an existing traffic signal, and relocation of overhead utility lines. Decorative streetscape elements include unique streetlights, street trees and wells, benches, trash receptacles, street signs, sidewalk pavers, stamped concrete, crosswalks, and intersection and midblock bulb-outs. Two public meetings were held to gain insight from the citizens regarding the project improvements. Two options were developed based on feedback, and the selected option was a combination of the two.
This project was completed 6 months after construction began; covered nine city blocks; used over 5,100 cubic yards of concrete; used 2,071 linear feet of reinforced concrete pipe; included 88 light poles, 129 trees and 5,973 plants; and gave the City of Cape Girardeau a 15-foot-wide pedestrian promenade.
The streetscape has received the Excellence in Revitalization through Placemaking award from Old Town Cape; and the Streetscape and Public Space Improvements award from the Missouri Main Street Connection organization.
