Project Engineer (Transportation)

Horner & Shifrin is seeking a full-time Project Engineer to work in our Transportation business unit. This position requires 5-10 years of experience.


  • Work as part of a team to complete general transportation civil engineering services for municipal, county and state agencies in Illinois
  • Geometric design of roadways, including interchanges and intersection design
  • Assist other engineers in developing design plans and contract documents, including but not limited to cross-sections, traffic control, drainage, signage, traffic signal plans, pavement marking plans and specifications
  • Responsible for the development of engineering plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E)
  • Assist in preparation of contract scopes of work, invoices, amendments, change order documentation, and claims documentation
  • Support the Project Manager(s) as directed
  • Assist with meeting set-ups and participating in meetings
  • Communicate and coordinate with client representatives and engineers
  • Provide good and effective written/verbal communication skills
  • Work with a team of multiple disciplines to complete project tasks within schedule and budget
  • Maintain contact with client staff, inquire about upcoming projects both within and outside of your business unit, and advise management of such upcoming projects; assist Marketing staff and Business Unit Leaders with potential projects/clients and preparation of proposals
  • Recognize and initiate business development opportunities to sustain and grow the department
  • Perform other job duties as assigned


  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Illinois
  • Proficient in the use of MicroStation and GEOPAK SS4 or AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Prior experience with federal-aid Phase I preliminary and Phase II design engineering services on IDOT or Local Public Agency (LPA) sponsored projects
  • Experience with traffic modeling software including HCS, Synchro, PTV Vissim and PTOE certification is a plus
  • Ability to prepare engineering analyses, technical reports, schedules, and memorandums
  • Ability to produce construction bid documents (plans and specifications) using IDOT/Tollway standards
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Ability to develop significant peer and potential client contacts with participation in Horner & Shifrin supported professional and social organizations – active participation in one or more professional organizations is encouraged
  • 5+ years of previous IDOT and/or Tollway project experience, preferred
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must complete a background check


Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering


Salary will be commensurate with experience
