Horner & Shifrin’s New S. Sprigg Street Bridge Project Wins ACEC Honor Award

H&S was also honored to receive a Distinguished Service Award for 85 years in business.

Horner & Shifrin, Inc. was presented the Honor Award for the New S. Sprigg Street Bridge Project at the Missouri Chapter of American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet on February 10, 2018. The annual project competition recognizes quality engineering design performed by member firms in the State of Missouri.

Horner & Shifrin (H&S) completed the design and construction management of a replacement bridge on Sprigg Street over Cape La Croix Creek for the City of Cape Girardeau. Sprigg St. is a vital route, connecting downtown Cape Girardeau with industrial and farming areas to the south. The original bridge was constructed in the 1930s, with a cave developing under the bridge by 1991. By June of 2013, four new sinkholes developed at the bridge, destroying the roadway and threatening the structural integrity, requiring closure of the bridge.

The City of Cape Girardeau hired H&S to evaluate the situation and offer solutions to re-open the route.  H&S teamed with Stantec and TSi Geotechnical, Inc. for geotechnical investigations and Civil Design, Inc. for survey.

With sinkholes riddling the area, it looked to be a difficult task to restore the connection.  After a detailed geotechnical investigation, thoughtful structural detailing and superb construction administration, the Horner & Shifrin team was indeed able to provide a new structure safe from the threat of sinkholes.

“The Horner & Shifrin team utilized their engineering expertise to find a solution for a very difficult situation facing our City. Restoring this connection is important to our community and we are thankful for the engineering excellence the H&S team provided throughout this project, from conception to construction,” said City Engineer Casey Brunke.

At the Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet, Horner & Shifrin was also honored to receive a Distinguished Service Award in recognition of our 85th year in business.
