Horner & Shifrin Turns 85

H&S President, Steve Donahue, shares memories from his time with the firm

Horner & Shifrin celebrates its 85th Anniversary this week, and in honor of this milestone, President Steve Donahue shares his memories of working at H&S, from first joining the company in 1998 to what he sees as the future looking forward to the 100th Anniversary.

Mr. Donahue was first attracted to H&S after finding them on the web. He was intrigued by their interesting project history, as well as the fact that the company was employee-owned. Steve felt an immediate sense of comfort in his first interview, which contributed to his positive first impression of Horner & Shifrin, which he says, “still rings true today”.

Since his start at H&S, one of the biggest accomplishments that comes to mind for Mr. Donahue is the I-64 Design-Build project the company worked on for Missouri Department of Transportation in the late 2000s. “We [Horner & Shifrin] designed the western three miles of that project. It was about $100 million of improvements in only 11 months. What’s interesting about that is,” Steve says “most people, when they hear we did that project, they’re very surprised to hear it was done by a company that had less than 100 employees.”

By Horner & Shifrin’s 100th Anniversary, Steve sees the company growing much larger. He has stated that H&S doesn’t need to grow to post bigger profits, but to provide its employees with more opportunities for advancement within the company. “I tell our employees, I would like everyone to retire from Horner & Shifrin,” Steve says. “If we stay true to our vision, 100 years will just be the beginning.”
