North Broadway Improvements

St. Louis Board of Public Service

Horner & Shifrin provided engineering design services to provide better pedestrian and bicycle access to the Historic Baden District.

Overview

The City of St. Louis’ Board of Public Service desired to revitalize the Historic Baden District by making the North Broadway corridor more pedestrian and bicycle friendly. Horner & Shifrin provided engineering design that included streetscape improvements from Thrush Avenue to Walter Avenue to assist the City with their vision.

Improvements involved raising and narrowing the roadway by reconstructing the sidewalk and curb infrastructure, which provided the benefit of better and safer access into local businesses. Traffic lanes were reconfigured to one vehicle lane in each direction, a shared traffic center turn lane, and dedicated bicycle lanes with a door buffer.

Other design elements included curb bulb-outs, drainage improvements with MSD coordination, decorative lighting, and street trees. New traffic signals, controllers, and modern ADA-compliant pedestrian signals and push buttons were installed at two Intersections along the project including Baden Avenue and Halls Ferry Road. Other work included the design of curb ramps and transit stops that were fully ADA-compliant. STP-funded project through the LPA Local Roads Program.
