Overview
The Crab Orchard Greenway is an ambitious multi-use trail project designed to connect the communities of Marion and Carbondale along the IL 13 corridor. Once complete, this greenway will offer a safe, scenic route for walking, biking, and other forms of active transportation—making it easier for residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors, commute, or reach local destinations without a car.
Recent progress includes new trail segments across the John A. Logan College campus and connections from Giant City Road to Reed Station Road, Greenbrier Road to the Crab Orchard Campground, and Division Street to Fleming Drive. Thanks to federal funding, the next phase will fill a key gap and add dedicated bike and pedestrian bridges across Crab Orchard Lake—opening up new opportunities for recreation and regional connectivity.
The Crab Orchard Greenway will serve as a major attraction for Southern Illinois, providing access to the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge and the Historical Village at John A. Logan College. By moving pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users off the busy IL 13 shoulder, the trail creates a safer, more equitable transportation option for everyone—helping people reach jobs, schools, and parks with confidence.
This project required close coordination with local schools, city and county officials, state agencies, and the U.S. EPA to protect sensitive environments and meet all permitting and safety requirements. The result is a community asset that supports healthy living, environmental stewardship, and a stronger regional identity.
