Little Hills and Mel Wetter Roundabout

City of St. Charles, Missouri

Overview

Horner & Shifrin designed improvements to the intersection of Little Hills Expressway and Mel Wetter Parkway in the City of St. Charles. A single lane roundabout was designed at the intersection that would be compatible with all future build-out options. Extensive geotech coordination was required during both design and construction because the initial geotechnical investigation uncovered soils with negligible bearing capacities.

The project design included a retaining wall, subgrade remediation, a roundabout on a relatively steep grade, open drainage and rock ditches, as well as Greenway connections. The Boschert Greenway/Fox Hill Trail crossing of Mel Wetter Parkway was re-established to provide an enhanced crossing of the road with a pedestrian refuge and lighting. All designs were in accordance with ADA accessibility requirements as defined in the Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG). The project included planting of the roundabout, repair of the greenway landscape with native plantings, new lighting, and city identification signage. This process followed the requirements of the LPA Manual since the project was federally funded through the CMAQ program.
